Identifying symptoms of a bed bug infestation can be tricky. One of the earliest and most noticeable signs of bed bugs is bites. However, it is difficult to determine whether bed bugs caused the bite marks or some other insects.

Usually, bed bug bites look similar to allergic reactions or other insect bites. Therefore, it is nearly impossible to identify early signs of bed bugs infestation.

#1 Bed bug faeces and faecal stains

Like every other living organism, bed bugs defecate. And its faeces leave behind stains, which are quite easy to notice and identify. When you see any unusual stains like a felt marker stain, it’s a sign your bed is filled with bed bugs. These stains are usually found on pillowcases, sheets or the mattress itself.

#2 Shed bed bug skins

When a baby bed bug (nymph) move towards adulthood, it starts shedding its skin for up to five times before attaining adulthood. If you find such skin castings on your bed frequently, it means your bed has multiple generations of bed bugs. How to identify the cast skins? – It is simple – usually, bed bug cast skin looks like a light coloured shell.

# 3 Empty Eggshells

If you find an empty eggshell, it is a definite sign of a growing bed bug population. Generally, the bed bug egg shells are very small – 1 mm in length. But, it is easily visible to the naked eye (a magnifying glass also helps). The empty egg shells look like a dried out casing of a bed bug but are less shiny, and slightly flattened.

#4 Typical Odour

Sometimes it is difficult to identify the symptoms mentioned above. In that case, you can identify the bed bug infestation by its distinctive odour. Bed bugs have a pungently sweet, musty odour. The odour is more pungent, and it becomes more obvious when the infestation is heavy.
